The project “Knitting for Australia’s animals”

The students and teachers of Grandaskóli participated in the project “Knitting for Australia’s animals” which is a global volunteer project.

Due to the extreme fires in Australia, many marsupials such as kangaroos have been orphaned but to survive and thrive they need to stay in warm and protective bags.

The bags had to be made from wool so Icelandic wool was used for the project and over 30 bags were knitted here in Grandaskóli. The knitters were mostly students from 7th grade. They helped each other and sometimes many “knitters” were involved during the making of a single bag.

The bags were hung up simultaneously on the textile wall in the school. On February the 4th, last Tuesday, the bags were all sent with a flight to Australia with the founders of the project in Iceland.   See photo gallery
